Beat the Streets Honors African American Wrestling Champions of the past during Black History month

Beat the Streets Wrestling would like to take this opportunity to honor the African American Wrestling Champions of the past during Black History Month. Below is a video of Kenny Monday, the first African American to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling, describing what it was like growing up to wrestle as a black kid.

Further down the page, you will find information provided by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame about the African American Wrestling Experience, biographies of all African American NCAA Champions, Olympians, and Hall of Fame Members, and more.

Video: Olympic Champion Kenny Monday on Wrestling as a Black Kid

Kenny Monday grew up in a tumultuous time. He started wrestling in the 60s and had to overcome prejudice. He was so motivated to over come it that he distanced himself from the competition with his skills and ability. He then used that same method to try and overcome his competitor Dave Schultz.
