Chaminade edges host St. Anthony's, as Farrell limps to 2-2 mark; Sea goes 0-4

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, L.I. -- The third annual Long Island-NYC CHSAA Dual Championship turned into a two-horse race late yesterday afternoon, and unfortunately for Monsignor Farrell and coach Lou DeStefano, the Lions didn't have the horses.
Chaminade and the host Friars each finished a perfect 4-0 and it was the Flyers that came away with the title and the tournament's "rusty cup" edging St. Anthony's in the second tiebreaker -- total bouts won -- 42-39.
Kellenberg Memorial (3-1) finished third with wins over Fordham Prep, St. Joseph by-the-Sea and Xavier; while Farrell tied St. John the Baptist of West Islip for fourth with a 2-2 record.
"I'm proud of the guys. They wrestled hard," said DeStefano, who was visibly disappointed with the final results.
Farrell was without top lightweights Connor Hanafee (knee injury) and Rich Benigno (concussion) entering yesterday's competition and lost Joe Francolino after the narrow third-round defeat to St. Anthony's, 36-35.
"We lost three, one-point decisions. All we needed was just one of those to go the other way," DeStefano said of the St. Anthony's match. "That loss really took the wind out of us."
Farrell opened with a pair of wins over Kellenberg (52-25) and SJB (59-13), before falling in a 21-9 hole against the Friars. The Lions made a run in an unlikely spot -- the middle of their lineup -- as Antonio Sparaco, Christian Psomas, Anthony Sapichino and John Newman posted four wins in the next five bouts to put Farrell up 32-27.
Farrell dropped the next two weights to fall behind 36-32, but still had life in the final bout with Marc Pirozzi taking on John Randazzo at 103 pounds.
Pirozzi hit a headlock throw early in the first, but could not stick Randazzo, who managed to squirm his way out. Randazzo did a good job riding out the third period on top, as Pirozzi came away with a decision victory and Farrell fell just short.
St. Joseph by-the-Sea experienced similar heartache in a tiebreaker criteria loss to SJB. The Vikings opened with five straight wins to lead 27-0 and Ryan Malloy's pin at 160 had Sea ahead 33-12, but the Cougars swept through the heavyweights to tie the score at 33-all.
Sea coach Kevin Brennan bumped his 96-pounder Anthony Castano up a class to force a double forfeit at 96 and a match at 103, knowing he had a hole at 112.
Castano came through with a pin at 103 and the forfeit at 112 in SJB's favor knotted the final score at 39-39.
Neither team had an unsportsmanlike penalty and with the double forfeit at 96, the teams tied on matches won. The tiebreaker came down to criteria F -- first points scored -- where SJB held a 7-5 advantage.
NOTES: It was the second title at the tournament for Chaminade. The Mineola school also won the inaugural edition in 2006 ... Farrell had four wrestlers finish 4-0 on the day; Psomas, Pirozzi, Kevin Hartnett and Newman.
