Monsignor Farrell HS (CHSAA) Defends its Team Title Winning the Annual Mayors' Cup Wrestling Championships at the beautiful Harlem Armory in Manhattan on Superbowl Sunday!

This year's version of the Mayors Cup was expanded to allow every wrestling program in all 5 Boroughs to participate in the prestigious event.

The competition's organizers, the Metropolitan Wrestling Association (MWA), is no stranger to handling huge events. The MWA was the Competition Manager for the 2003 World Championships held in Madison Square Garden. For this year's Mayor's Cup, new divisions were added for Girls Wrestling, 20 Developmental teams created the past 2 years and another Novice Division for Junior Varsity wrestlers.

In a separate area of the facility, the Beat the Streets Wrestling Middle Schools held its annual Wrestling Day with a clinic, skills and drills and a light scrimmage for all 200 hundred kids from the 10 Winter Programs.

The clinic had a very special guest, Mike Novogratz, Chairman of Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. Mike was a former Captain, NCAA Qualifier and an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) runner-up while wrestling all 4 years at Princeton University. He provided a 90 minute session reviewing the basic skills and position drills for the wrestlers. He broke the wrestlers into smaller groups and conducted some live scrimmaging. All of the kids and their parents had a great time. After the clinic was completed, they observed their future high school teams wrestling in the Cup.

The event required two days of competition and under consideration is options for next year as the event has grown so big it may require Madison Square Garden to house the potential huge event.

Next year the BTS/PSAL will be expanding with 15 new high school teams being added. The schools selected will be announced in the Spring by the PSAL Office.
